Revised road bike crankset in many variations
The new FC-R8100 crankset from the ULTEGRA range offers the same fast, precise front shifting performance and efficient power transfer that Shimano is known for. Furthermore, it is available in even more length options than before. With lengths ranging from 160 to 175 mm, the ULTEGRA cranksets are now also suitable for shorter riders, triathletes, and anyone who prefers shorter crank arms.
As a key component in Shimano's new 12-speed road bike lineup, the FC-R8100 crankset is characterized by Shimano's signature shifting quality and transmission efficiency. Redesigned for seamless 12-speed shifting, the ULTEGRA crankset is available in lengths from 160 to 175 mm. This translates to increased performance and improved adjustability for smaller riders, triathletes, and riders with specific biomechanical needs.
Technologies used
In this chapter, we explain the technologies that the manufacturer uses in this product.
HOLLOWGLIDE - large hollow chainring
The extremely rigid hollow structure reduces weight while maintaining the same strength. This results in better power transmission and faster, more precise shifting at the front.
HOLLOWTECH - hollow-forged cranks
Lightweight cranks reduce the overall weight of the bicycle and, most importantly, the rotating mass crucial for acceleration. The challenge lies in reducing the weight of the crank without compromising stability and load-bearing capacity.
Shimano's state-of-the-art forging technology offers an ideal solution with the HOLLOWTECH crank. Just like a high-quality frame tube, the hollow-arm crank is extremely stable and durable despite its very low weight.
HOLLOWTECH II
Perfect balance between stiffness, stability, weight, and rotational efficiency. The HOLLOWTECH II technology concept was designed to create an optimized crankset that minimizes the rider's effort required for propulsion. The crankset's high stiffness ensures efficient power transfer while pedaling, while its low weight reduces rider fatigue, especially on longer rides. The crankset was developed with an optimal ratio of stiffness to low weight in mind. HOLLOWTECH technology enables extremely lightweight, hollow crank arms, manufactured using SHIMANO's exclusive forging technology to achieve maximum stiffness. Additionally, on the HOLLOWTECH II crankset, the right crank arm is rigidly connected to the bottom bracket axle, achieving an optimal balance between maximum stiffness and minimum weight. The external bottom bracket provides better weight distribution and increased stability, resulting in more efficient power transfer.
In the development of the HOLLOWTECH II crankset, emphasis was placed on an optimal balance between stiffness and rotational efficiency, as well as low weight and attractive appearance.
High-quality precision seals. The HOLLOWTECH II crankset also features high-quality precision seals in the bearing area to extend durability and maintain excellent rotational efficiency in the long term.
