Cervélo Aspero Rival XPLR AXS 1X
In 2019, the Áspero took the gravel world by storm, ushering in a “new era of speed on gravel.” The new Áspero stays true to its original concept but features several improvements: a threaded bottom bracket shell, cleaner cable routing, and a UDH-compatible derailleur hanger for those looking to use SRAM’s Transmission drivetrain systems. And, of course, it’s more aerodynamic. With the Áspero, aerodynamic performance isn’t so much about raw speed through reduced drag, but rather about saving energy. After a tough day battling headwinds, the three watts saved over the previous Áspero could add up to one less energy gel for your stomach to digest.
In addition to reducing drag, the seat stays were lowered for a bit more compliance at the rear, and the front wheel stiffness was slightly reduced to make the final hours of a long race less painful. A little more tire clearance was also created between the lowered seat stays for muddy conditions, incorporating lessons learned from the R5-CX (and the 2023 Unbound mud-bashing). These are many seemingly small improvements, but they add up to a significant amount. The result is a bike that feels like the original Áspero, but is faster, more comfortable, and more versatile.
